WHAT’S HAPPENING -- THE ISLAND BEAT
(Thanks to Jan Critchley of the British Virgin Islands)

Fun on fisherman’s day:
On Territory Day, July 1st, head to Long Bay Beach, Beef Island and take part in Fisherman’s Day. There are three categories – trolling, reef fishing and the family tournament as well as beach games such as swimming races, diving, tug-of-war, soldier crab races and domino games. There will also be live music and a fashion show. Registration is at Conservation and Fisheries Department by June 30th and a valid fishing license must be obtained to take part in the trolling and reef fishing categories. So get out your bait, cast your line and who knows, the “Big One” just might not get away!

Firecracker 500 & Chili Cook-off:
Don’t miss the Firecracker 500 Pursuit Race. The race starts with a bang at Soper’s Hole in the morning and from there, racers compete on the north side of Tortola. Registration is on July 1st at the West End Yacht Club for the event the next day. The Great Chili Cook-Off takes place at the Jolly Roger in the afternoon, and all proceeds go to KATS. So join in the racing action, cook up your meanest chili or just help judge the competition – it’s going to be one hot night!

Race & Cruise to Jost van Dyke:
Cruising and racing fun for all the family is what’s happening in June as the RBVIYC introduces a new addition to its sailing program – the Race and Cruise to Jost Van Dyke. Family fun is the key here as there will be two separate races, one for the serious racers and one for those who prefer a more leisurely pace and to race with their family and friends. Shoreside events will also be arranged at Jost Van Dyke to make it a great day out for all.

VISAR’S swim the sound:
Have you ever wanted to swim the North Sound of Virgin Gorda? Well, if so, this is your opportunity. In June, Virgin Islands Search & Rescue will be holding the annual Swim the Sound event and participants will sign up to swim either two or three mile swims. As the swimmers complete the race Water World will begin! Water World is a day of fun, food and games for the whole family at Leverick Bay, Virgin Gorda. All proceeds go to VISAR, a voluntary organization dedicated to saving life at sea.

Kats Premier Cup:
Support this worthy event in July as teams of young sailors between 10 and 18 year of age come together from all over the Caribbean to race, socialize and have fun together. In previous years it has been a wild success in terms of competition and fellowship. Part of the Kids And The Sea (KATS) program, the young sailors race IC24s and the only cost to the teams is the airfare. Over 100 Rotarians, RBVIYC members and other volunteers give their time to this event and provide the kids with transportation, accommodations, food, boats, life jackets and drinks. Event organizer Tom Gerker said, “This year is expected to be the biggest turnout yet with over 12 Caribbean teams having expressed interest. We are also trying to attract youth from less advantaged groups.”

Guy Aldridge memorial race:
If you enjoy lots of fun, rum and acts of piracy then this is the event for you. This annual challenge between the inaugural trophy holder the “Loyal” West End Yacht Club and the Royal BVIYC gets underway in July. Two races are held, the first to Oceans 7 Beach Club on Peter Island. After lunch, the second race gets underway which is a lighthearted affair and involves laps around Great Harbour in Laser dinghies. Various acts of skullduggery are involved (even encouraged) including capsizing of opponents’ boats, boardings and removal of crew! At the end of each lap each team has to drink a shot of rum and shout a suitably loud pirate phrase. So, pick your team brush up on your pirate slang and enjoy a riotous day on the water!
